That sentence is the beginning. You read it back and something clicks. Not because it's perfect, but because it sounds like you.

Two writers can describe the same room and produce entirely different worlds. That difference is voice. It is the specific gravity of your attention — what you notice, what you linger on, what you skip past.

From here, the work changes. You are no longer searching for a voice. You are learning to trust the one you've already found. This is the hardest part — not finding it, but believing it is enough.

Write badly. Write with abandon. Write the sentences you would never show anyone. In the mess, your voice lives.

Don't chase someone else's rhythm. Trust the cadence that comes naturally when you stop performing and start telling.

Read your drafts aloud. Listen for the places where the prose tightens, where the rhythm falters, where you stumble over a phrase that was written for the page but not for the ear.

The ear knows things the eye misses. When you read aloud, you hear the music of your writing — or the absence of it.

Some writers keep a separate notebook just for voice. They copy out passages from other books that resonate — not to imitate, but to study the mechanics of resonance.
